In 1968 a small group of people with a new vision and a distinct call to serve God, dedicated themselves to establishing First Baptist Church of Tolland. Since that time there has been a continuous mission by its members to bring the Gospel message of salvation to Tolland, surrounding communities, and foreign lands. The leadership and members of FBCT believe that the primary mission of our church is to fulfill the Great Commission given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:16-20:
The Great Commission
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
FBCT is a member of the Western Connecticut Baptist Association, the Baptist Convention of New England (BCNE). The BCNE is a group of churches affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention located in New England. Headquartered in Northborough, Massachusetts, the convention is made up of seven Baptist associations and around 270 churches as of 2010.
BCNE affiliated churches are transformational and mission oriented. Transformation speaks to a spiritual change that begins from the inside and works out. It is different from changing a habit or gaining a new skill or deciding to take on a new self-help discipline. It is a paradigm shift that begins with a change of heart. A people with a heart that represents the two great commandments given by Jesus Christ in the New Testament!
Matthew 22:36-40 The Two Greatest Commandments
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
We are contemporary in our worship and theology. You are free to worship in whatever manner you desire consistent with Biblical teachings. We are called to “worship in truth and in spirit”! Our worship is to flow out of our inner spirit and a soul that is in a love relationship with our Lord and Savior. We are a Holy Spirit filled body of believers in Jesus Christ and embrace the principles of Renewal Theology, offering a vibrant and dynamic environment for individual spiritual growth and rich fellowship as we celebrate our lives in Jesus together as a family of believers that have on vision, one heart, and one passion, which is to love God, love One Another, and share the Gospel of Christ with the lost.
